Product Description |
|
In 1965, 16-year-old Robin Lee Graham began a solo around-the-world voyage from San Pedro, California, in a 24-foot sloop. Five years and 33,000 miles later, he returned to home port with a wife and daughter and enough extraordinary experiences to fill this bestselling book, Dove. |

Amazing story |
I first read this book when I was around 15, but one of the earlier editions with colour pictures, I think perhaps the periodicals from the National Geographic made into a book? It was beautifully written and has the kind of potential to be life impacting. Like someone else said. Better to read after college then before.
Anyway this version is quite different and talks a lot about his g/f and then wife, Patti. In fact almost as much or more then the voyage.
I think I preferred the first version and would recommend that over this for a first time reader, but this was interesting as well. Almost another book.
Looking foward to reading the sequal about their life in Montana afterwards - Home Is The Sailor.

Warning - read post graduation only |
Just finished reading Dove for the second time in as many weeks. All I can say is I am glad I did not read this book before I graduated from college. If I had I would of immediately quit school, bought a boat and set sail.
I will probably read this book a third time before returning it to the library. Then maybe I will take a couple days off and see if I can't circumnavigate one of the big lakes around here in my kayak.
If you are at all adventurous or wish you were, do yourself a favor and read this book.

One of The Great Sailing Love Stories of all Time |
I was first introduced to "The Dove" by finding the VHS tape of the movie in a sailing store. I noticed that the move came from a book of the same title so I bought the book. I then noticed that National Geographic actually did the series of articles during Robin's 5 year adventure so I went to old book stores and found the three issues (Oct. 1968, April 1969, Oct. 1970, with a short followup article in October of 1988 where they called Robin "National Geographics all time favorate teenage author"). I also found out the Robin had written two other books, A Golden Book, The Boy Who Sailed Around the World Alone, and Home Is the Sailor, talking about his life immediately after sailing around the world, both of which I was able to find. By then I was so fascinated by the story that I wanted to know how they were doing now (1997) and was able to track down Robin and wrote him a letter. He was kind enough to send me his family's latest Christmas letter. He and Patti were still happily together. They had two children and are active in Christian activities.
The book is an amazing grand sailing adventure and love story. It's a book which you won't want to put down. |

Sailing solo around the world at such a tender age.. |
|
This non fiction story is filled with interesting adventure. A young boy setting off to sail the world. Finding new friendships, discovering beautiful places and falling in love with a girl that was raised not too far from his home in the U.S., yet met half way around the world. A very good read. |

Great Adventure |
|
One of the true great adventures of our time. A great read for all of us 'Walter Mitty' types who dream of doing such things but never find the time or have the ability or courage to do so. A wonderful story. |
