"Brian's Winter" Book of CD |
|
I purchased this book on CD for my 12 year-old grandson who does not like to read but will follow along as the story is being read to him. Chapter endings are indicated by a bit of music in the background and after a short pause the reader announces the next chapter, which starts at the beginning of a new track on the CD. This makes it easy to find where to begin playing the CD for the next chapter, allows for easy continuity and lessens the frustration of finding the starting point for each chapter. This is especially important when the student reads only a couple of chapters each day. |

Wonderful Continuation of "Hatchet" |
It never occurred to me that there could be a sequel to "Hatchet". After all, at the end of that book Brian was rescued. And yet, there it was amongst the other books by Gary Paulsen, so I picked it up, wondering what it could be about.
Rather than doing 'hand waving' author-magic to get our hero back into the woods, Gary just comes straight out and explains that he got lots of mail asking what would have happened to Brian if he hadn't been rescued. I guess, like me, those readers were wondering if he would have frozen to death. And Gary's solution to this question was to do some research and then to simply pretend that the rescue kit never had a rescue beacon.
In any case, if you liked "Hatchet", you will like this continuation of Brian's adventure. The tone of the writing and story is exactly the same. This, and the other books which followed, are just fabulous.
Highly recommend this kid-tested and parent/teacher approved series.

Deserving successor to Hatchet |
Only half-way thru the book, but Paulsen definitely keeps the rhythm and suspense of the north woods alive here. Doesn't have the emotional subtext of the first novel, but still lives and breathes Brian's struggles, and gives us new perspectives on survival and determination as Brian confronts the unanticipateable challenges of the winter months.
As crisp and clear as the original.

Best Book Ever |
|
Thirteen year old Brian stuck in the wilderness only armed with a hatchet. He is alone in a Canadian wilderness. It happened when the plane crashed. The main idea is surviving in the wild. I really like this it is a adventures and entertaining. You will be suprised about the ending. It is a really good book i say one of his best. My favorite part was when the bear attacked him wile he was sleeping you will like it too. |
