Just as Do the Right Thing was the capstone of Spike Lee's earlier career, Malcolm X marked the next milestone in the filmmaker's artistic maturity. It seemed everything Lee had done up to that point was to prepare him for this epic biography of America's fiery civil-rights leader, who is superbly played by Oscar-nominated Denzel Washington, from his early days as a zoot-suited hustler known as "Detroit Red" to his spiritual maturity after his pilgrimage to Mecca, as a Black Muslim by the name of El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. Do the Right Thing climaxed with the photographic images of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King engulfed by flames of rage; Malcolm X explores the genesis and evolution of that rage over Malcolm's lifetime, and how these two great figures--held up to the public as polar-opposites within the African American human rights movement (King for nonviolent civil disobedience, Malcolm for achieving equality "by any means necessary")--were each essential to the agenda of the other. Lee careens from the hedonistic ebullience of Malcolm's early days to the stark despair of prison, from his life-changing conversion to Islam to his emergence as a dynamic political leader--all with an epic sweep and vitality that illuminates personal details as well as political ideology. Angela Bassett is also terrific as Malcolm's wife, Betty Shabazz. --Jim Emerson |

A Must For All People Around The World |
|
As a baby boomer growing up in the South during the 60's, I was always told that Malcom X was the violent of the leaders of the struggle of African Americans, in contrast to Martin Luther King. After watching this magnificent film, and reading THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOM X by Alex Haley, I have to say that my perspective of Malcom X has been drastically altered. He was a visionary and Spike Lee's movie portrays him as such. Denzel Washington's performance is absolutely riveting. The screenplay is 98% accurate, and I should say all of the supporting actors are just fantastic. We see the metamorphasis of a human being, ready to die if neccessary for the cause for justice and freedom. A Must See For All People Around The World! |

Malcolm X |
I have seen this movie on countless occasions. I have found myself having to replace it after purchasing it several times because I never get it back upon loaning it out. This is a masterful work of art that takes you through the history of Malcolm Little to Malcolm X to Malik El Hajj Shabazz. I consider this movie a must see for all Americans before leaving this world. I rate this movie on the same list of importance as visiting Washington D.C. and New York City. If you think being an American is more than just a birth right you will definitely appreciate this movie. The movie is quite long and kinda of drags in some areas, but if you gain some background on Malcolm before viewing the movie you'll understand. This is a very entertaining, but complex movie on a very complex man.
Two thumbs up!!! |

Malcolm X |
Biographical drama on the life of the late Malcolm X, who was assassinated on February 21, 1965. A black man who went from jail to leading a revolution. This is a great educational movie, to help everybody learn about Malcolm X. Denzel Washington gives an outstanding performance, no one else could have done it so well. The DVD I have, has a special feature documentary of the real Malcolm X. I've never seen anyone more charismatic than him.

A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!! |
|
THE MOVIE WAS A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT AFTER READING THE BOOK(AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOM X BY ALEX HALEY). THE MOVIE HAD SOME GREAT ACTORS LIKE DENZEL WASHINGTON AND YET, IT WAS STILL VERY DULL. "DIRECTOR" SPIKE LEE RUINED A GREAT CHANCE OF TELLING THE AMAZING STORY OF MALCOM X. |
