More channels than without it
We just hooked this up today, so far we're really happy with it overall.

It took a while to decide how to hook it up with our other DVD player, our receiver, and TV, but we got it. Basically we replaced our old VCR with this DVR, using the same cables that we unplugged from the VCR. The cables run from the DVR to the receiver and are hooked up there as the "satellite" even though clearly it isn't. Our receiver is about 13 years old so it only has so many hook-up options and the DVD player occupies the DVD inputs on the receiver. We also ran composite cables from the DVR to the TV directly.

Why keep the old DVD player? Maybe we won't, but the old DVD player has center and sub-woofer speaker output lines, which this DVR doesn't have. We may want to keep that capability for sound-intensive movies.

It was pretty easy and intuitive to set up a test recording to the HDD, and to play it back. The biggest and best surprise was this:

We have the most basic cable TV possible - with only about 15 channels (and a couple we aren't supposed to be getting but we do). When setting up the auto channel scan, I chose the option for Cable (analog/digital) to see what would happen. When we press the DTV button on the DVR remote, we get channels we couldn't get before. For instance, the local ABC station is channel 27 here - we now get the 27.1 27.2 and 27.3 stations broadcast by the local ABC station. Without this DVR we got only the primary local ABC station, which is 27.1. The same is true with many stations, and then we have some we didn't know existed, like ION. The only thing (which is a minor nuisance and well worth the hassle) is that I cannot find anything listing what stations are associated with the channels we get when we press the DTV button on the DVR remote. (I tried the cable company's website, none of them match the channel listings they have.) When the DVR is on "TV" instead of "DVR" (the button works as a toggle switch) we see the channels (in the line-up) that we had before the DVR, which is also a good thing. We know where to find the familiar stations we're looking for there!

BTW, the remote requires pointing pretty directly at the DVR and the buttons need to be pressed firmly, not tapped. Also, the channel up and down buttons are small, and there is no volume control on the DVR remote.

Fix for finalize glitch
To get around the glitch for the finalize problem is to go into the settings and tell the machine to go back to the factory settings. Tnis will clear the glitch.

I am no computer person but sometimes you have to just use some common sense to solve the problems.

Have a great day and remember to wear your dark glasses when burning a dvd disc. Just kidding.

Bad dvd
Hard drive is great, but would not record to dvd's.....Did not format disc's....Returned product for another one. Still waiting for it.......
Recieved it today 8/31 , works as advertized. GREAT service on the returned product.!!!!!

DVD Digital tuner
Works as advertized. Sure it could have more features like TV guide and maybe Netflix but for the price it's a good buy. Nothing but good things to say about the vendor. Product came on time and in great condition.

Pretty Easy
It was easy to set up,I just used the same configuration I had on my VCR except for the sound which used seprate wires. Once you read the manual do some setup and resetup it works great. To bad the people who write the manuals never seam to have seen or set up or used what there writing about'but I digress. So far its been great good picture, good sound and ease of use though I havent made any cd,just recored TV. No cable or TVo cost. My tv looks much clearer too! Must be the digital tuner anyway its great not to have stacks of vcr tapes lying around.Well worth the price.
